Graduating from college without a clear career path can be frustrating. It goes without saying that you will frequently be asked the ever daunting question about future career plans.

My career began with a post-graduate internship at DVL. I knew agency experience would be a perfect way to launch my career in public relations. So why weren’t people impressed when I told them about my plans to work at the agency of my dreams? Not everyone could see past the title.

While the title “intern” is not something a recent graduate might be eager to flash, it is worth taking a second look at these opportunities for several reasons.

Internships are a great way to get a foot in the door. If the company you are interested in isn’t currently hiring, use the intern program as your point of entry and work hard to prove you deserve to stay around. At the end of the program, they just might agree.

Similarly, internships are perfect if you still are not 100 percent sure what you want to do – and let’s be honest – what college graduate is? Just as the company will be using the time to see if you are a good fit, this is the perfect opportunity to see if this really is a company you would be interested in working for full-time.

Last but certainly not least, look further than a paycheck for the true value of an internship. The real value lies in the experience. If there is not a job offer at the end of the internship, you’ve added to your portfolio and hopefully gained some great references. In the end, degrees are great but experience makes a difference.
